I first heard about this show in our daily newspaper. My newspaper
reading habits are somewhat like of a happy go lucky person's attitude
towards work: if he does it, he does it with his soul, if he doesn't,
there stands no chance in hell for it. Gradually the show's release
date neared and even though the needed hullabaloo started gathering
pace, I did not pay much heed to it. The day this show was released I
was travelling, so in order to kill time and spare my self from the
silly Punjabi movie Mirza these bus wallahas were playing, I spent
most of my time on the dearest Facebook. Now, this show was into some
serious limelight boss - I understood. I saw feeds from people like "
Aamir, I'm your true fan !" , "Hats off Aamir !".He had made an impact
on the youth and Facebookers, who get swayed and carried away by every
emotional and philosophical content they come around on Facebook ( I'm
surely going to get some serious haters for writing this, but sorry
guys admit it we are of that stock. I'm amongst you. Don't worry we
all are for some pinch of good by getting emotional and sharing pages
we think that can do good). Now the bells started to ring inside my
head. I decided to watch this show.

My intial attitude about this show, thinking that it was just another
social awareness show, was dismissed upon watching the first episode.
It was a vivid testimonial to the evil of Female Foeticide. The women
who appeared on the show were true warriors and knights of the war
with their destiny. Female foeticide is in itself a heinous crime and
there happen to be numerous cases everyday. If my memory traces back
correctly, I was in 8th grade when we were educated regarding the
procedure followed for an abortion, in a class which was focused on
moral sciences and education about all these vices. This created a
serious impact on my mind. Following that, there happened to be
numerous cases everyday around India. Newspaper headlines were filled
with reports of aborted female fetuses found around drains or garbage
cans. So much so, it became such a common happening that I stopped
reading these news. Eventually laws tightened and it became evident
for the people and hospitals started putting up boards condemning
female feticide and denied any involvement in regards to conducting
gender determination tests. But still unto this day this ratio remains
quite differentiating. 3 crore aborted fetuses every year as Mr. Khan
put it. Grave, quite grave.

Now the issue with our social problems is that once it starts getting
some momentum in our country, people leave their daily chores and get
to the streets. There happen to be some days of couch potatoes sitting
around television sets and watching the entire happenings around, bus
stop conversations, some evening tea papparazi and after some days or
weeks, poof !  It's gone. And same is the case with us, including me.
I'll not single myself out as a socially motivated honcho. But Yes
it's the case with us- The Facebook Generation. The other day I read
someone's blog, very interestingly it was titled ( I may be wrong
since it's been a while I read that) 'Too young for philosophy'. Well
now this is not philosophy but a real issue , my stance on this whole
issue is on two main points - 1) Why we rectify our misdeeds only when
somebody kicks our butt ?  2) Why our memory is so short lived ?

I never say that we have never overcome our problems , we have but why
the time lag ?

And another question to ponder upon - Why do we keep forgetting things
so soon ? Why it is that Aamir Khan had to remind us about our killed
girls ? Why did he have to ask people to send him texts in order for
him to garner support for his move? These questions are of very
regular nature, they keep surfacing, but still we need a catalyst to
let the things burn.

It's good to get motivated and excited by all these acts of
philanthropy, but where does all the excitment vanish when the ways of
the world start to play dirty ? Where does it go, when one realizes
"Main biwi bachhe wala aadmi hoon."

Writing this piece this does not mean I'm for this genocide ! Well I'm
up in arms against this holocaust. How can one even think of
committing such a sin ? During the Mughal era, women were killed so as
to save them from the foriegn invaders, and now they are killed just
to save the expenses of dowry. If all the men pause for a bit and
think if it is done to their mothers and sisters ? I believe all of
them would be tight lipped. And yes all the tender hearted men out
there, would you do it to the girl you love/loved ? Could you look
into her eye after even having a thought of it ? I guess no.

If someone happens to ask me, would you do this to your
girl/girlfriend/wife? Well friends ,I treasure her more than anything
else, then how can I think that about my girl child? Even if she would
not be there in my life, I would name my girl after her, but yeah I
gotta hold my horses right there ! Ha-ha , there is a long road ahead
to it ! :-)

  1. First of all it is a copy of Rakhi ka Insaf.... Secondly, the first statement is a joke. Now, we think that just by updating status msg, sharing pictures on facebook and all that we are making a difference when we are not. The people we should reach haven't reached Facebook yet. But then again, who's to blame? We need to give women the same status as we give to men, else things wont change. We always blame low literacy for poor education, where as literacy and education are two different things. Education is much more important than literacy.

That being said, good job on blog. Keep up the fight.

  2. nice work..Gurbir..go for journalism..and about Female Foeticide, we have a defunct society with no religious/moral values. Everybody is just living for the sake of "what others will say" attitude.
